Makalu Base Camp Trek details

Makalu Base Camp Trek is one of the off-the-beaten treks in the isolated part of Eastern Nepal. It leads you to the virgin site of nature with abundant attractions. Mt. Makalu (8468 meters) is the 5th highest peak in the world.  The freshness of the countryside energizes you to explore the surrounding and to have a new insight into life. These aspects have made this trek in Eastern Nepal a luminous trip in the Himalayas.

Trek to Makalu base camp begins from Chichila, after a picturesque Himalayan flight to Tumlingtar and a drive to there. Heading through the unique landscape and rhododendron forest along with the trail following the River bank, you walk to the base camp located at 5000 meters. The greeneries of the evergreen forest and cascading waterfalls of the Makalu region are awesome. It is bound up by the Makalu Barun National Park, which is richly loaded with flowers and the green forest.

The base camp is the exciting viewpoint of the 8000 meter peaks and the glacial region. You can explore Mt. Everest (8848 m.), Lhoste (8516 m.),Barunste (7161 m.) and the surrounding snowy peaks from there. Walking to the Barun Pokhari, you can get excellent views. Detail Itinerary

Day 01Arrival at Kathmandu. Namaste and welcome to Nepal. Alpine Excursion Treks and expedition's representative welcome you warmly at the Tribhuwan International Airport and transfer to the hotel. You take rest and enjoy your meal in the evening. Overnight at Hotel.

Day 02Fly to Tumlingtar, drive to Chichila (1840m). After the breakfast at hotel, transfer to the domestic airport to fly Tumlingtar. There, we meet our further crew and drive further to Chichila. Then we prepare our belongings for the long trek from tomorrow onwards. Overnight at lodge.

Day 03Fly to Tumlingtar, drive to Chichila (1840m).From Chichila, we begin the trek early and enjoy the view of Mt. Makalu. Starting gradually, we pass the Kuwapani village and proceed ahead, crossing the Daaju La pass (2100m). Then we climb down through the steep downhill trail and through the forest, we reach to Num. Overnight at lodge.

Day 04Trek from Num to Seduwa (1460m). 5-6 hrsAfter the breakfast, we begin to walk with a gentle descend to the bank of the Arun river. We cross the suspension bridge over it and ascend all the way through the thick sub-tropical forest that leads us to the Seduwa village, where we check into the National Park office. Overnight at lodge.

Day 05Trek from Seduwa to Tashigaon (2070m). 5-6 hrsPassing through the Murmidanda, our excursion today begins after the breakfast. The local lifestyles, farmers working on their farm, children going to school and other sceneries make your beginning wonderful. Passing the countryside, forest and walking through the farm land, we reach to Tashigaon, the last settlement on the trail of the Makalu base camp camp trek. If needed something more, this is the last point. Overnight at lodge.

Day 06Trek from Tashigaon to Khongma (3470m). 6-7 hrsToday we follow the trail that goes through the alpine forest, with the steep route. Passing through Unshisa, we go on walking through the steep uphill trail. We can see some local lodges, which generally opens only in the peak trekking seasons. We continually climb up to Khongma hill and take a rest. Overnight at tented camp.

Day 07Rest (acclimatization) day.The beautiful hill top location of Khongma is the amazing location for the rest and acclimatization. We are already in the higher altitude and will continue ascending to the alpine level. We walk around and enjoy the view of Makalu and its surrounding. Overnight at tented camp.

Day 08Cross Shipton La and trek to Dobate (3650m). 5-6 hrsIt's time to head through the forest and randomly occurring meadows and some high passes. After breakfast, we continually ascend to the Shipton La Pass and descend all the way to Dobate, which is a junction point of the two trail. Overnight at tented camp.

Day 09Trek to Yangle Kharka (3600m). 5-6 hrsThe downhill trail begins as we begin to trek after the breakfast. Then, we begin to climb, passing the rhododendron forest and alpine meadows, we reach to Yangle Kharka. The jaw dropping slope of the grassy slope and the widely open valley is breathtaking. Overnight at tented camp.

Day 10Trek to Merek (4500m). 5-6 hrsBeginning to climb up, we pass the alpine forest and some small streams. The altitude is increasing that makes our trek slow as we need to adapt with the weather so that we can avoid the altitude sickness. Merek, which is located at the glacial moraine, is also a brilliant viewpoint of the surrounding landscape and the enticing Himalayan range. Overnight at tented camp.

Day 11Trek from Merek to Shersong (4615m). 6-7 hrsFrom Merek, we walk continually after the breakfast and walk down to the Barun River and cross the bridge. Passing the alpine forest of rhododendron, pine and fir, we head through the meadows and reach to the Barun River. Across the large glacial lake, there lies the open Shersong valley. Overnight at tented camp.

Day 12Trek from Shersong to Makalu Base Camp (4800m). 6-7 hrsAfter the breakfast, we head through the steep up the glacial moraine trail from the right turn. We reach to the Shersong top, which is a beautiful viewpoint and trek down gradually crossing a small bridge over the stream. Then we climb up continually to the Makalu base camp, which is just an incredible viewpoint of Mt. Makalu and its surrounding peaks. Overnight at tented camp.

Day 13Trek to Yangle Kharka (3557m) 8-9 hrs Good morning at Makalu base camp. The early morning sunrise view over the snowy peaks cannot be described in words. We take abundant photographs and begin to trek down after the breakfast. Through the glacial moraine trail, we move down and take a break once we reach to the Yangle Kgarka.

Day 14Trek to Mumbuk (3540m) 4-5 hrs Again to walk downhill. After the breakfast, we walk down to Mumbuk all the way through the hill slope and the rhododendron forest. In spring, you will be fascinated by the colorful flowers. Then take a rest and enjoy the evening. Overnight at tented camp.

Day 15Trek to Khongma (3500m) 6-7 hrsFrom Mumbuk, we commence to descend via Dobate. Then we cross the Shipton La Pass and enjoy the view of the downhill valley and the remote fresh countryside. Walking through the meadow and dense woods, we reach to Khongma top viewpoint. Overnight at tented camp.

Day 16Trek to Tashigaon (2100m) 5-6 hrs After the breakfast, we begin to walk downhill passing some of the tea houses that open only in the trekking seasons. Then we trek down further Via Unshisa and the trail become steeper, passing the forest, we reach to Tashi Gaon. As we climbed down to the sub-tropical range, it becomes easy in regard the altitude. Overnight at lodge.

Day 17Trek to Num (1560m) 4-5 hrs. Finally, we are again in the human settled area. We can buy things here, along with enjoy the activities of the local people and their lifestyles. Then we trek down to the Seduwa village through the dense woods. We checkout from the National Park office. We descend to the Arun River and walk up to the Num village and take a rest. Overnight at lodge.

Day 18Trek to Chichila, Transfer to Tumlingtar: 9-10 hrs. The last day of the trek, we walk from Num after the breakfast, with the destination of Chichila and then transfer to Tumlingtar. It's half of the way trek and half of the way drive. On the succession of the trek, we spend the evening celebrating with the trekking staffs and bid farewell to the crew. Overnight at lodge.

Day 19Fly back to KathmanduFrom Tumlingtar, we fly back to Kathmandu, waving our hands to the giant snowy peaks. Arriving in Kathmandu, transfer to the hotel. Then, it's time for laundry, rest and delicious meal. Overnight at hotel.

Day 20Free day in Kathmandu for final shopping. Today, you have the whole day for your personal business. You can enjoy shopping, buying things for your loved one and relatives. Enjoy the time roaming around and selecting the things. Make your last day memorable. Overnight at hotel.

Day 21Departure. The last day of the trip, the representative of the Alpine Excursion Treks and Expedition drops you to the airport. Thank you for joining us for your memorable trip. See you again.
