The ancient pre-Buddhist Bon faith of Tibet saw mountain massifs as key points joining heaven and earth. They believed that Mount Kailash was the main point of the crown of Zhang Zhung. The fight for the hearts and minds of Tibetans between the established Bon and the newer Buddhists concentrated on Mount Kailash. The story of the contest of Magic between the Bon deity Naro Bon Chung and the Buddhist saint Milarepa to decide which cult might claim the holy massif is still studied today. Legend has it that Milarepa was successful. Milarepa was magnanimous in triumph and bequeathed an adjacent top to the Bon-po and agreed that they could still circumambulate Kailash.
